A
Writers' Workshop is a place that provides free writing
assistance for writers of all levels, starters,
professionals, and even veterans. It is a platform where you
discuss your writing with consultants who are experienced
writers and teachers of writing.
The
sessions are interactive in nature. You can consult your
consultant, who through close reading and questions, will
help you express and articulate your ideas. He helps you
and even works with you at all stages of the writing
process, from brainstorming to writing to revising. You can
bring a copy of your writing to the session, or just your
ideas.
The Writers’
Workshop can be on-line workshop/critique group for serious
Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror writers. The main purpose is
to help writers improve, not only by having their work
scrutinized by other members, but also by learning to
scrutinize their own work.
An
on-line Writers’ Workshop works like this: Suppose you
submit a short story or chapters of a book. You email your
manuscript, it gets put into a queue of stories; in due
course, when it reaches to the top of the queue, it is
emailed around to the members. Analysis is due within a
week. You may get 10-15 evaluations. "Evaluation" means an
in-depth description of how the Analyst felt about and
reacted to the book, with the intent of helping the writer
improve it. It is expected from the Analyst that he/she
would likely comment on characterization, plot, setting,
logic of the underlying idea, effectiveness of the opening
and ending, etc., as well as smaller mistakes like factual
inaccuracies, logical mistakes, unclear passages. Also
sometimes any grammar or spelling errors that escaped
proofreading are also looked upon. Comments may be of praise
or concern. Generally praise is reserved for areas the
reader thinks the author has done exceptionally well.
Typically more concerns are raised than praise, since it's
the "concerns" the author is most likely to want to address,
especially those shared by multiple readers. Concerns should
always be phrased tactfully and as the author's personal
opinion.
The main aim of
holding Writers’ Workshops is to promote creativity
and sharing of ideas and insights among the participant
members and to respect and appreciate the contribution of
the authors.
